NATIONAL MASSAGE THERAPY AWARENESS WEEK
~ OCTOBER 25-30, 2009 ~
|
This year National Massage Therapy Awareness Week, October 25th through the 30th was a wonderful success for the AMTA-NY Chapter! The American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) began active celebration of National Massage Therapy Awareness Week in 1997 to promote public awareness of the massage therapy profession and the benefits of massage therapy.
Each year AMTA members and Chapters hold public demonstration massages, public education programs and other activities to promote better public awareness of massage therapy. AMTA also collaborates with massage associations in Canada to hold massage awareness activities during the same week. We actively work to educate the public about the benefits of massage and are also trying to dispel the myth that massage is only a luxury. Studies have shown that massage therapy is highly effective in the treatment of back pain, treating migraines, alleviating the side effects of cancer and lowering blood pressure, to name a few.
A statewide effort was made as we chose to reach out to Hospice volunteers and staff, senior population in assisted living facilities and senior centers to provide complimentary, full clothed 10-15 minute treatments in order to raise awareness of the benefits of massage. The senior population is rapidly growing and we hoped that through some hands on work that they would realize that the many ailments that accompany age can be alleviated through touch.
Our efforts took place from way up north in Plattsburgh and as far south as Long Island! I am so grateful for our wonderful team leaders as well as team members who made this week such a success!
